The steps can be used to ascend the natural incline present and will conveniently get you to the top. Conversely, they can be used to descend from the top to the bottom. Of course there are tons of websites that will give you proper information. All I can add is there are some good pubs in Whitby, some with bands on. Definitely a nice day out and worth a visit or a revisit.

Sandsend, a few miles up from Whitby, has some great roadside parking and a lovely long beach. Perfect for paddle boarding. Its a great walk into Whitby along the beach if the tide is out and you can get a bus directly back to Sandsend. Tide times are below but you can view more detail here Whitby Tide Times.
